How Does Theatrical Makeup Differ From TV Makeup

All the artistes whether they are on television or live theatre use makeup to look better. It is quite obvious that so many people are going to watch them on television or live in a theatre; obviously they want to look more beautiful. No one is perfect in terms of looks, so obviously they will try to hide the skin spots with the help of makeup as much as possible. In television and theatre field, beauty is considered as one of the important factors for which the common people just fall for their favourite celebrities. Hence to keep themselves in demand of their fans and sponsors these celebrities have to maintain their beauty.
The cosmetics used in theatres are very different from that used in Television and films. In theatres, artists give more priority to the character played in that play rather than looking attractive. Hence the use makeup according to the characters played by them. The main objective of director and artists working in a theatre is to make each and every character look perfect so that audience can relate to the play and cosmetics plays a major role in helping them convey what they actually want to show their audiences.
On the contrary, television artists use makeup just to look attractive and grab their fan’s attention. These artists are only concerned about their looks rather than the characters they play in the movie or serials. Because often people just come to watch their favourite celebs onscreen even if the movie is not so good. Cosmetics used in theatre is more realistic and natural whereas the one used in films and televisions are just to make them more presentable and nothing is related to the script. Television and film cameras can easily hide the skin spots with the help of special effects and in theatre you cannot hide anything as everything is happening in front of audience. No special effects can be used in theatre since there are no cameras.
Lighting plays a major factor in making the artists look different in both theatre and televisions. In theatre, due to less brightness in light theatre artists look much different than the artists appear on television and films. In reality theatre stage doesn’t require much lighting because it is only for the live audience whereas television requires proper lighting as the world is going to see their stars. Also there are so many lighting arrangements for the plays that the makeup used loses its brightness and in order to overcome this, the makeup artists mostly use bright and vibrant colours which can be easily observed by the audiences. Theatre makeup gives a new life to the character played by that artist. Hence it is necessary to give a proper finishing touch to the makeup applied.
On the other hand TV artists don’t require using vibrant colours in their makeup as the cameras gives a more perfect and natural look to their makeup. Special effects play a major part in displaying the characters as more glamorous and attractive. remember that the plays are continuously played in one go and don’t have any breaks, whereas the TV artists gets a break after each shot and at that time they use a touch up for their makeup.
